What's New

12/19/2006
The year flew by

It is the end of the year already. In looking back over the year the ongoing relationship with MJSA Journal (formally AJM) has been one of the most personally rewarding. It has been a chance to try something new every month for the cover. Some of the wildest shots never get used but the process really get the creative juices going and it is a lot of fun.

Thanks to Techform I got the cover on AJM

Finishing up the Year

A quick catch up, I bagged two summits for my Mazamas membership, the studio has been on cruise control doing standard photo projects. I am currently working on "Exciting new changes" (a way over used phrase) for next year. Stay Tuned

I an attempt to take my scenic photography to new heights I have completed Mazama's Basic Climb School Education Program. I hope this will take me from looking up at the NW Mountains to looking down the slops.

Fall turned out to be dry, allowing for some great photo safaris to the mountains. I have updated the Scenic section with new work.

9/15/04

It has been a great summer for getting out to explore new locations for future scenic photos. Fall looks like it is coming early here and with it the rains. It will soon be time to concentrate on more studio work.

The digital camera has worked out better then I would have imagined and I have change over to digital being my standard shooting platform. The quality of the new digital camera is comparable to shooting medium format film and getting a high-end oil drum scan (this was my standard quality level in the past). But the digital camera offers faster turn around times (same day delivery of photos by FTP site or email), no guessing at what will come back from the lab (frees up the creative juices), real time client feed back and approval by email (boy are folks picky now) and major cost savings. Better, faster, cheaper it is a no brainer..

3/03/04

I made the move in February to a high-end digital workflow. I have been doing more and more digital shooting for the past couple of years but was limited by camera file size. Now with a new 14 megapixel camera most of the limits are off. I am still in a learning curve on the new camera but I hope to have it mastered soon.

1/24/04

In spite of some of the limits of digital photography it is opening up some new possibility. I have been working on a new light set up for use with the digital camera. The digital camera allows me to use light sources that just do not work with film cameras. This is allowing me to bring a new texture to the light and how it plays on a piece of jewelry. It is a bit brighter and more edgy then the traditional "classic" set up

Shooting came to a halt for the past week. We normally do not get much, if any snow and never ice, but we got hit with a foot of snow and then 2 inches of ices. Normally we enjoy barbecuing in the rain all winter but not this year. And when the ice starts taking down 80 year old trees in the yard it is not fun at all. Now I know why folks live in southern California.

And so the New Year begins. Rest time is over and the first projects are coming in. It will be interesting to see what the direction this year takes.

Boy, doesn't time fly when you are busy. I am just coming off of four month (and about 1000 delivered photos) of constant shooting. The last six weeks I have been working day, night and weekends and unfortunately had to turn down some projects. I am surprise to realize that I have not used any film for a month, shooting all digital. I am look forward to some down time for Christmas and New Years. It will be a time to rest and work on projects I have been putting off (like updating this web site). Then it will be back at it in the New Year.

8/29/03

I am staying very busy shooting (Christmas is coming) and changes are happening fast. Digital shooting is getting more popular. This leads to a change of equipment, a change of work flow, a change in working with clients, and a change in working with other trade professional. The changes are offering new possibilities but also leads to confusion as the old way of doing things no longer apply.

7/4/03

Started the second half of the year facing the heat. Did some action shots at Techform at the burn-out ovens. They said the oven were cool but I could fell the heat 15 feet away.

 6/15/03

I attended the Glass Arts Society convention in Seattle, WA. Jane and I did three days of lectures and demonstration and finished off the forth day with a visit to Pilchuck Glass school. It was a golden learning opportunity. Photo is line to the dinner tent on the night they did the barbecue Salmon Dinner.

6/7/03

It has been a busy time. I have been going none stop since November of last year. Through some surprising connections at the first of the year I have been exploring and photographing the world of original hand made art glass objects. I have been working with a new industry publication "The Flow" and this has taken me on a wild learning curve. I have some new photos on the Glass & Art Portfolio page.

10/21/02

With the Fall bite in the air I got a chance to get out and do some scenics. We are having some nice weather before the rains starts so it was great to be able to take advantage of the last of summer. This time of year the high mountain lakes are the best subjects.

 7/19/02

I decided it would be nice to show some printed samples of my jewelry photography, so I have add several examples to the jewelry photography portfolio. It is on thing to produce a photo it is quite something else to produce a photo that reproduces well in offset printing.

 6/29/02

I have added a few new photos to the jewelry photography portfolio. These show the use of the glass float technique and a white back ground set up.

5/22/02

I have been working this past year with Katie on fashion, head shots, and portrait set ups. I have add a new section with samples of photos from that work.

 Redo on the site

Finished redoing the web site for a new, more contemporary look. I hope the new format will make for easier navigation and make it easier to update. Stay tuned.

People Shooting

I have been working on portrait, fashion and model test shoots with a new model Katie. This is giving me a chance to add content to the Modeling Advice site and to dust off may people shooting skills. I am working to be able to offer model test shoots and to offer affordable live model/jewelry photo services. I hope to have more to show on this in the near future.

The Modeling Advice site does seem to be taking up my free time but it now has around 11,000 visitors a month. It is also giving me a better understanding of the fashion industry and jewelry's place in it.

Digital Jewelry Photography

I am continuing to work the all digital process in. I have gotten the bugs worked out on the color management and am now able to get good quality predictable color. I had hope I to be able to offer a much better catalog product then the stand group page at the same price but have found it just take time to put a project together. Cost are running two to three times higher then a simple catalog page shot. They however really do not compare in visual effect.
